ABSTRACT

The use of Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) can favor the early diagnosis of apical periodontitis and influence its prognosis and treatment; however, there is no standardization among the indexes that determine the presence of periapical lesions in this radiological technique. For this reason, the aim of this study was to evaluate periapical lesions using three indices on CBCT. The study population consisted of all the CBCT scans performed in a Peruvian radiological center for one year, a non-probabilistic sampling was performed and 36 Cone Beam tomography's were evaluated with the CBCT-PAI, COPI and CBCT-ERI indexes; the data collected were analyzed statistically and it was determined that the CBCT-PAI index identified 91.7 % periapical lesions; the COPI index, 72.2 % and the CBCT-ERI index, 88.9 %. Likewise, Pearson's x2 test was applied and a value of p=0.05 was determined. Therefore, it was concluded that the diagnosis of periapical lesions on Cone Beam computed tomography can present similar results when evaluated with any of the CBCT-PAI, COPI or CBCT-ERI indexes.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: The present report describes the case of a 12-year-old patient with 17-year follow-up who was previously diagnosed with Papillon-Lefèvre Syndrome (PLS), which is a rare autosomal recessive irregularity in the cathepsin C gene (CTSC) characterized by palmoplantar hyperkeratosis and premature loss of primary and permanent teeth. Case Report: A specific mutation in the c.203 T > G gene inducing loss of function leading to PLS was detected, as was a mutation in the HLA-DRB1*11 allele, which is associated with this syndrome. There is no consanguinity of the parents, and the siblings are entirely healthy. Early identification of the main characteristics of this syndrome is imperative. Accurate diagnosis by genetic analysis allows differential diagnoses and timely comprehensive dental treatment. Conclusions: Additionally, it allows consultation with a dermatologist to maintain or improve the quality of life of patients with this condition due to progressive worsening and severity of the main physical manifestations. Keywords: Papillon-Lefevre Disease; Keratoderma, Palmo-plantar; Cathepsin C; Periodontitis; Skin Diseases, Genetic; Case reports

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Objective: This study aimed to compare the root length of maxillary and mandibular incisors between individuals with open bite versus matched individuals with adequate overbite. Methods: This comparative, matched and retrospective study included 48 cone beam computed tomographies (CBCTs) obtained at a university radiological center. Scans belonged to 24 individuals with open bite (overbite ≤ 0 mm) and 24 individuals with adequate overbite (controls). Both groups were matched by age, sex, malocclusion classification and skeletal characteristics (ANB and FMA angles). Root length of each maxillary and mandibular incisor was measured in millimeters (mm) in a sagittal section from a perpendicular line to the enamel cement junction until the root apex (384 length measurements were made). The means of root length in both groups were compared using t-tests. In addition, correlations between variables were evaluated with the Pearson correlation coefficient (α = 0.05). Results: In both groups, the root length of the upper central incisors was approximately 12 mm and the root length of the maxillary lateral incisors was approximately 13 mm (p˃ 0.05). Likewise, the root length of lower central incisors in both groups measured approximately 12 mm (p˃ 0.05). However, the mandibular lateral incisor roots of open bite patients were significantly longer than in the normal overbite patients (approximately 1 mm, p= 0.012 right side, p= 0.001 left side). Conclusions: Root length of maxillary incisors and central mandibular incisor is similar in individuals with or without open bite, but the mandibular lateral incisor roots in open bite patients were significantly longer than in the normal overbite patients.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT In order to determine the association between oral health and oral hygiene conditions and nutritional status in children using a health facility in the Huánuco region, a cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted in 118 children who attended the Growth and Development Control (CRED) of the health clinic "La Esperanza." Oral health and hygiene conditions were evaluated by visible bacterial plaque, simplified oral hygiene, simplified bleeding, and gingival inflammation indices. Nutritional status was obtained from the last CRED control recorded in the clinical history. Acute malnutrition (AM) was the most common nutritional status. Among children with AM, the proportion of severe gingival inflammation was 60.3%; gum bleeding, 61.5%; dentobacterial plaque presence, 59.3%; and poor oral hygiene, 60.3%. There is evidence of a greater impact of oral health and oral hygiene on children with malnutrition, mainly acute.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Objective: The objective of this research was to demonstrate the efficiency of the overbite depth indicator (ODI) and the anteroposterior dysplasia indicator (APDI) from Kim's cephalometric analysis, regarding the determination of the vertical and sagittal patterns of Latin American individuals. Methods: Two hundred lateral cephalometric radiographs were selected and divided into four study groups, with 50 radiographs each, for carrying out a cross-sectional study. The control group included radiographs of balanced individuals, and the other three groups had lateral cephalometric radiographs of subjects with Class I, II and III malocclusions and with skeletal open bite. After the pilot test was performed to calibrate the investigator, the ODI and APDI were measured. Descriptive statistics were performed and the one-way ANOVA with post-hoc Tukey HSD, or Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney U-test were used. Also a multiple linear regression was employed. Results: Statistically significant differences were found for the ODI of all groups (p< 0.001), except between Class I group (65.87 ± 4.26) and Class II open bite group (67.19 ± 3.58), both with similar values to each other. For APDI, statistically significant differences were also found for all groups (p< 0.001). However, no statistically significant differences were found between the balanced group (83.18 ± 1.71) and Class I group with skeletal open bite (81.78 ± 2.69). Conclusions: ODI and APDI are reliable indicators to evaluate the sagittal and vertical patterns of an individual, demonstrating their efficiency when a Latin American population was evaluated.

ABSTRACT

Background: Today, there are several diagnostic methods to determine the exact size and nature of periapical lesions. Furthermore, there are studies that described thickening of the mucous membrane of the maxillary sinus (MS) in patients with periapical lesions and demonstrated a causal relation. Aims: This study aims to evaluate the morphological variations of the MS floor (MSF) adjacent to chronic periapical lesions in molars and premolars using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). Methods: Twenty-five CBCTs with periapical lesions adjacent to maxillary molars and premolars were evaluated. A total of 50 maxillary sinuses were analyzed (12 males and 13 women) taking into account density changes within the sinus cavity. The thickening of the sinus mucosa and the periapical lesions was measured in a caudal-cephalic direction. The axial and sagittal axis was taken as reference on the sagittal and coronal sections. Statistical Analysis: Chi-square, Fisher exact, and the Mann–Whitney tests were used in this study. Results: A significant association between the size of the periapical lesions (>4 mm) and the presence of MSF affectation was found on sagittal and coronal views (P < 0.001). No significant differences between the presence or absence of periapical lesions and the thickening of the sinus mucosa were found (P = 0.241). The presence of opacification on the MS had no direct associations with the periapical lesions. Conclusions: Maxillary sinus floor affectation was associated with chronic periapical lesions >4 mm. The opacification or thickening of the sinus mucosa was not related with the periapical lesions.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to evaluate the Björk and Jabarak cephalometric analysis generated from cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) synthesized lateral cephalograms in adults with different sagittal skeletal patterns. METHODS: The sample consisted of 46 CBCT synthesized cephalograms obtained from patients between 16 and 40 years old. A Björk and Jarabak cephalometric analysis among different sagittal skeletal classes was performed. Analysis of variance (ANOVA), multiple range test of Tukey, Kruskal-Wallis test, and independent t-test were used as appropriate. RESULTS: In comparison to the standard values: Skeletal Class III had increased gonial and superior gonial angles (P < 0.001). This trend was also evident when sex was considered. For Class I males, the sella angle was decreased (P = 0.041), articular angle increased (P = 0.027) and gonial angle decreased (P = 0.002); whereas for Class III males, the gonial angle was increased (P = 0.012). For Class I females, the articular angle was increased (P = 0.029) and the gonial angle decreased (P = 0.004). Björk's sum and Björk and Jabarak polygon sum showed no significant differences. The facial biotype presented in the three sagittal classes was mainly hypodivergent and neutral. CONCLUSIONS: In this sample, skeletal Class III malocclusion was strongly differentiated from the other sagittal classes, specifically in the mandible, as calculated through Björk and Jarabak analysis. .

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this investigation was to determine the concordance between the mandibular canine, premolar, and second molar dental calcification phases according to the Demirjian method and the maturity skeletal phases according to the Fishman method in 182 children and adolescents 9 to 16 years old of a peruvian town, to which carpal and periapical radiographs were taken and registered at the same time. The correlation levels were high for all teeth in both sexes, for males were r=0.822 to 0.906, being the lower second molar which had the highest correlation for females were r=0.843 to 0.934, with a higher correlation with the lower canine. Concordance between dental calcification phases in mandibular canine, premolar and second molar and the skeletal maturity phases is different in each one of the assessed teeth, being the canine the tooth with higher concordance and clinical usefulness. Finally we conclude that dental calcification can be clinically useful to assess the skeletal maturity phases.
